POLNET Barcelona 2020 (ERASMUS)
Social network analysis (SNA) offers numerous quantitative applications in the field of political, sociological and organizational sciences. These methodological tools, practices, theoretical assignments, and practical problems play a central role in this POLNET seminar. Our intention is to provide the participants with knowledge on basic functions of social network analysis such as centrality analysis (which actors are central in a given network?), subgroup analysis (do specific actors share a particularly large amount of connections with each other?), or discourse network analysis. In addition to an overview of theories and data in political science network research, the most important network analysis techniques are presented. A central component of the course is its practical introduction to the programs R, DNA, Visone and NetLogo. Moreover, we cover advanced SNA techniques such as QAP (Quadratic Assignment Procedure), ERGMs (Exponential Random Graphs Models) and ABM (Agent Based Modeling).
This workshop is suitable for graduate students (Master’s and doctoral levels), as well as for researchers with an interest in the empirical study of social and political networks.
