The field of computational social science builds bridges between relevant questions in the social sciences and computational tools and methods. These novel approaches aim to provide new perspectives on known questions or help address long-standing problems through development of new research tools. In many instances, this implies implementing, testing and validating innovative methodologies that can then be used by the broader field in everyday research. In this lecture, I present a number of my recent interdisciplinary projects on crime, conflict and political instability. These projects make use of different computational tools and methods ranging from agent-based modeling to automated spatial data analysis, systematic data integration and the analysis of very large semi-structured datasets. I will highlight the specific computational social science contributions in each project while carefully analyzing both the strengths and limitations of different approaches.
