The University of Konstanz’s Department of Politics and Public Administration has secured top ratings in fourteen of eighteen categories, scoring the best result nation-wide among state-funded universities and thereby confirming the excellent evaluations it has received in various subject rankings in previous years. Both the curriculum and its research reputation have been judged to be excellent. The CHE ranking confirms the department’s strong orientation towards professional and research application, as well as its outstanding general study conditions and its support of students.
In three of the four overall categories, the department is represented in the top group. Only in the category "International orientation" did the department narrowly miss the top group (Konstanz: 4/9); Top group starting from 5/9). This assessment may surprise those familiar with the department's diverse international contacts and study opportunities, especially since with the updated examination regulations, a stay abroad in the bachelor's program is compulsory and the student assessments in the area of "Support for study abroad" have reached a peak of 1.5.
However, a close look at the different categories and areas of the ranking is therefore highly recommended.

CHE Ranking
The CHE-University Ranking 2016/2017 was published in May 2016. The University of Konstanz's department of Political Science and Public Administration was ranked among the best in two out of five areas.
In the area of "International Orientation", the CHE places the department in the middle group. This assessment may surprise those familiar with the department's diverse international contacts and study opportunities. However, further examination of the criteria used by CHE explain this assessment: Initially, individual study programmes are evaluated. A maximum of 13 points are awarded. A study programme belongs to the best if it achieves 6 points or more. The MA-programmes of the department were awarded 10/10 possible points placing them securely in the top group.
However, only BA-programmes are counted in the total evaluation of the department as seen in the overview. The BA-programme of Politics and Public Administration achieved a score of 5, placing it just below the top group. This was partially due to the high number of students (70-80%) that complete a study or work exchange abroad as well as the extensive offering of course held in English hardly being counted towards the evaluation. Furthermore, the students evaluated the department's offerings of foreign exchange opportunities with the outstanding grade of 1.4.
The department achieved a grade of 2.2 in the area of teacher support for student, falling just short of the top group. The nuances found in the CHE grading system make it worth while to examine the rankings in detail, rather than focusing only on the green, yellow and blue groupings.
